As editorial director and managing editor for the Nuts, Bolts, & Wheels: 100 Years of Buggy book project, I worked with the University Archivist to expand the companion exhibition’s narrative into an expansive published work. We incorporated additional photographs and stories that enriched the historical narrative. I established editorial workflows, coordinated approvals, and maintained strict oversight of budget and production timelines. I balanced creative direction with practical execution, ensuring the book delivered a cohesive yet more detailed exploration of this cherished Carnegie Mellon tradition while complementing the exhibition experience.
The Interfraternity Motor Sweepstakes—affectionately known as “Buggy”—represents one of Carnegie Mellon University’s most enduring traditions. This student-run competition perfectly embodies CMU’s interdisciplinary ethos, blending engineering precision with artistic design and athletic performance. The event demonstrates the university’s distinctive ability to integrate art and science, creating applied knowledge that extends beyond academic boundaries. As a centerpiece of Spring Carnival, Buggy celebrates collaboration across disciplines and generations, showcasing how students, faculty, staff, and alumni work together toward common goals. This century-old tradition continues to exemplify the innovative problem-solving and cross-disciplinary teamwork that defines Carnegie Mellon’s unique educational community.
